Akureyri Airport Hotels
Akureyri Airport (AEY) is situated at approximately 3 km from the centre of the Akureyri city, Iceland. It serves both international and local flights. Some companies using AEY are Air Iceland, Icelandair and Iceland Express, with Air Iceland being focused mainly on local flights. The first flight scheduled here dates back to 1928, when Airline of Iceland opened a route to Reykjavik, which lasted for 3 years.
In 1937 the Airline of Akureyri was founded, to change its name into Airline of Iceland several years later, with no connection though to the previous company with the same name. The airport construction proper began in the 1950s on the delta formed by the Eyjafjorour River and the new terminal added in 1961 was further renovated in 2000 so that the airport may serve international flights.
There is one single runway serving the airport which has been subject to a process of expansion.
Isavia started a renovation program in 2009 during which the runway was enlarged by 500 meters and its lighting underwent significant improvement. Additionally, the approach system was replaced by a new one in 2010.
There are further plans for the airport improvement for the coming years, in order that the airport may handle larger aircraft as well as the ever growing passenger traffic. As the volcano eruptions in 2010 caused the country’s main airport of Keflavik to close due to unfavourable conditions, Akureyri took over a significant number of international flights, leading to an obvious need for a larger terminal.
