Elk Prestique® Grandé
Tops Minnesota Visitor Center
Dallas, Texas - November 30, 2005 ElkCorp (NYSE: ELK)
subsidiary, Elk Premium Building Products, Inc. (Elk) announces
the installation of Elk Prestique® Grandé High
Definition® shingles on the new Oswald Visitor Center at the
Minnesota Landscape Arboretum in Chanhassen, Minnesota.
Elk Prestique Grandé in Weatheredwood
installed on the Oswald Visitor Center at the University
of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum.
The center was completed in January 2005 and serves as the entry
point to the arboretum and also an education center to the 250,000
visitors that come through every year. The design of the center
complements the original center (named the Snyder Building) that
remains in use. Both buildings mimic the architecture of English
Costwold cottages and French country homes. When choosing a roof
for the building, designers wanted a product that resembled the
quality of cedar shake, but would be more durable. The large size
of Prestique Grandé was also an advantage. The Oswald Visitor
Center is very large, so it was important to install a large-scale
shingle to correspond with a building of its size, and Prestique
Grandé in Weatheredwood proved to be a perfect fit.
The Prestique Grandé shingle here was chosen to
give it a rich look that fits into the surroundings of the area,
said Steve Hegge of Berwald Roofing, contractor for the project.
Elk shingles are my choice of high quality selections.
Prestique Grandé is one of the first hybrid shingle products
from Elk. The shingles combine VersaShield® XP, a unique,
non-asphaltic headlap, with a large-exposure laminated shingle,
allowing for a bigger look without excess weight and raw materials.
In standard laminated asphalt shingle construction, the headlap
and shingle are manufactured from the same web and made with fiberglass,
asphalt, and granules. Elks mission was to create a shingle
that would conserve asphalt and granules in the headlap, while
providing protection against the elements. The result was Prestique
Grandé which offers a larger exposure than conventional
laminated shingles and a bigger dimensional look that complements
the roof lines, particularly on todays steeper slopes.
Elk Prestique Grandé provided the greatest shadowing
and depth and was the best size shingle for our large building,
explained Peter Moe, Director of Operations for the Arboretum.
The roof exceeded our expectations and is very attractive.
Moe had such a positive experience with Elk products, that when
deciding what brand to use on his own home this fall, he chose
Because of the aesthetic results on the Oswald Visitor Center,
Prestique Grandé was also installed on the Snyder Building.
We have had many compliments on both roofs since they were
installed, said Moe.
