Elk Honored with Quality Award from David Weekley Homes

Dallas—September 7, 2005– ElkCorp (NYSE: ELK) subsidiary Elk Premium Building Products, Inc. (Elk), achieved an “A” in quality by David Weekley Homes, the nation’s second largest, privately held home builder. Elk received a “Partners of Choice Award” from the builder, a distinction voted on by David Weekley Homes team members in its National Trading Partners Survey. The awards are presented to companies that maintained an “A” rating for the previous twelve months. Over 100 suppliers were rated, but only eleven received an award.

The survey is a company-wide effort for David Weekley Homes. Team members at every level from all markets participate in the quarterly survey. Companies are rated based upon quality, services, product training and supplier relations. Each company is assigned a numeric score ranging from “A” to “F.”

Bill Justus, vice president of Supply Chain Services for David Weekley Homes, implemented the quarterly rating system to test the responsiveness of its suppliers to the needs of their team members. At the same time, the survey provides valuable feedback from David Weekley Homes employees to its suppliers. Elk know exactly how they are doing in each market and at every level inside the Weekley organization.

“David Weekley Homes sends a powerful message to their customers by driving quality, starting with the manufacturers and continuing all the way through the home building process,” said Curt Barker, senior vice president of Sales and Marketing for Elk. “This award is shared by all Elk employees who are involved daily in maintaining a high quality standard. This is a great addition to our eighth year in a row receiving the #1 in quality award from readers of Builder magazine.”

The National Trading Partner Survey is sent quarterly to over 175 team members (700 annually). Since its inception in September 2003, David Weekley Homes has seen significant improvement in the average scores, and high participation inside its organization.

Justus said, “Elk’s demonstrated performance puts them in a very select group of providers.”

Elk’s strong alliance with David Weekley Homes began 15 years ago. Today, Elk is the supplier of the most laminated shingles for the Weekley organization.
